Tree of the Month - March

This Manna Ash (Fraxinus ornus) found by Aidan Champion at Abinger Hammer in Surrey becomes much the tallest known example at 24.8 metres, and is a perfect example of how fascinating trees can continue to be discovered in the least expected places. Grafted at the base, this tree was planted in a beech-wood some distance from the nearest house. It's part of a group which was first noted by Brian Spooner, Dick Alder and Mariko Parslow in 2012, but this particular specimen, drawn up among the beeches, is outstanding for its height.
