Support the Tree Register – a unique charity of volunteers recording, promoting and conserving our finest trees
Recording our tree heritage in Britain and Ireland
Volunteers update the Tree Register by gathering and recording information on the largest, tallest, most notable and historic trees throughout Britain and Ireland.
Records over the last two centuries provide us with a unique insight into the changing condition and status of the most significant trees found growing here.
These trees are a remarkable part of our heritage and cataloguing them highlights their value to society and encourages them to be cherished and nurtured.
Details of no less than 295,000 trees (represented by over 10,000 species and cultivars) are recorded on the database, an immense contribution to creating awareness of the significance of trees in both rural and urban environments, from great country estates to street trees in our towns and cities.
Over 200 years of data
Our exceptional database has direct scientific and educational value for researchers, writers and journalists, gardeners, botanists, foresters, arborists and the public at large.
Over 200 years of data with 50+ years of growth rate analysis on thousands of tree species, providing evidence of changes in climate and the distribution and survival of many new species to help inform future amenity, urban, countryside and forestry, tree planting in Britain & Ireland.
Champion trees
The Tree Register provides the only definitive list of where to find the largest and tallest “champion” trees, with over 90,000 trees accessible online, regularly updated.
Champion tree labels in gardens and collections help the public identify these trees of special interest.
How donations and subscriptions contribute to our work
Funding helps us maintain and regularly update a dynamic interactive website with up to date mapping to showcase our unique data. It allows us to support a nationwide network of dedicated, skilled, unpaid volunteer tree hunters and recorders to provide robust records, covers the cost of our unique champion tree labels and the design and distribution of our annual Yearbook.

The Tree Register also distributes grants from a bursary which supports tree recording and related projects throughout Britain and Ireland. For details go to our Bursary page
