Arbutus menziesii
Generally, volunteers going in search of a tree recorded years before will expect to find it, if at all, more or less where it used to be.
One exception is Edinburgh’s champion Madrone (Arbutus menziesii), which used to grow in front of an office block at the corner of South Trinity Road with Ferry Road in Trinity. When this site was redeveloped as housing about 18 years ago, Cala Homes chose to move this specimen to a more sheltered location in between the new blocks of flats. A species from the Pacific seaboard of the United States which tends to be notoriously fickle with us, this Madrone has slowly settled into its new spot behind 38 Larkfield Gardens, and is now thriving again.
